Hi - Our network had an ongoing battle with the sality virus for months, but we finally managed to erdicate it from the workstations using a combination of antispyware and microsoft security essentials. However, the culprit is still lingering on both our SBS 2003 and Windows 2003 servers and i dont know how to get rid of it. Antispyware software wont do the enough because after it finds it and removes it, it pops up again later or after a reboot and hijacks a whole load of.exe forcing me to re-install over the infected program again to get it working, which is driving me nuts.

I would prefer not to commit to an antivirus software for server unless its really necessary and someone recommends a decent one. We used to use AVG (for Server) but the signstures got old and i didnt renew. If someone who could give me a sure to work step on how to erdicate the virus from servers without formatting the pcs of course!

I would be very grateful as i have wasted countless hours fighting it. Dear zejarra Sality Virus Description: Sality is a family of file infecting viruses that spread by infecting exe and scr files. The virus also includes an autorun worm component that allows it to spread to any removable or discoverable drive. In addition, Sality includes a downloader trojan component that installs additional malware via the Web. Symptom: As with many other malware, Sality disables antivirus software and prevents access to certain antivirus and security websites. Sality can also prevent booting into Safe Mode and may delete security-related files found on infected systems.

To spread via the autorun component, Sality generally drops a.cmd,.pif, and.exe to the root of discoverable drives, along with an autorun.inf file which contains instructions to load the dropped file(s) when the drive is accessed. Remediation: Scan the system with up-to-date antivirus software. If a file is found to be infected with Sality, allow the antivirus software to clean the file. If other malware is found, allow the antivirus to delete or take the action recommended by the scanner. (For assistance, see Clean, Quarantine, or Delete?).

If the malware persists, use a bootable antivirus rescue CD to boot the system cleanly and scan the system again. To prevent re-infection via infected USB drives, disable autorun. Check this link: Good Luck. Hi All - i already used the Kaspersky removal tool which basicly re-writes some of the registry entries corrupted by Sality, such as greying out the Task Manager - however, as i mentioned before, it seems to come back again later, hence i cam never seem to track down the source. At the moment i am running NO Anti Virus on the Server and will sign up to one so long as i know it will do the job.

In the meantime, will the AVG removal tool be able to remove the virus or are there other scans i need to do on top of this? In addition to the other great suggestions posted; if they all fail, try creating a bootable antivirus CD. If that doesn't fix it, then you've got some serious problems.

It's always good to keep on hand at anytime: What I like is that there are just some pesky items that can't be removed while in Windows. I run from a bootable source first, then go into Windows and see what's left over and then deal with it after. The bootable CD sometimes will take care of 80-100% of the infected items; making it that much easier.

Best of luck to you. Hi thanks for this - I have managed, it seems, to remove the virus from the Windows Server 2003 but the SBS one is still infected and even using the AVZ tools i can get further into Safe mode but it restarts as soon as i try to login - nightmare!!!

I really cannot believe that my only choice will be a format but maybe i am not doing things the right way round - RPG Girl, do you think that by registering the full version of Dr Web, i will have access to more powerful realtime scanning that will deal with the infection? If it worked for one of the servers i cannot see why it cannot work for the other, though it may be running more services and it also tends to get logged into more often with terminal Services - Any other tips i can use in Normal Mode to get rid of the blighter? Sorry for late reply.

With DrWebCureIt, the difference between the FREE and FULL version would be the real-time protection and the automatic update feature which the free one doesn't have. You can just try the FULL version. I know these file infectors can be really tough to remove and reformat is usually the quickest option. Sality can be as tough as virut unfortunately. I'd say try the Full version and see.

But first also try Kaspersky's online scanner(though not as thorough as their installed version) its detection rate is usually better than other antiviruses. Online scan doesn't remove any threats found so you would need to save a logfile.
